David Barrett Trio A Whisper To Thunder
in preparation for stellar new release.

Toronto - Internationally acclaimed Instrumental Progressive Rock group David Barrett Trio (David Barrett, Jason Farrar, Alexander “Sascha” Tukatsch) are preparing for the release of their second landmark studio album by releasing a spectacular live DVD and accompanying digital audio release from their breakout 2013/14 Tour.

The DVD/audio release “A Whisper To Thunder” was captured in April, 2013 at a live performance in Toronto. The show was in support of the Trio’s first release and featured a state-of-the-art, stadium level spectacle of light and sound, with a laser show designed by long-time Rush lighting director Howard Ungerleider of Production Design International.

Their first studio album was produced by Canadian music legend Alex Lifeson (RUSH) and Richard Chycki (Dream Theater). It also featured contributing production for the track “Belmonte” by Alan Parsons (Pink Floyd, Alan Parson Project). The release received stellar reviews and garnered global attention for the group. David Barrett is now widely viewed in the music community as a world-level instrumental composer and virtuoso performer, as evidenced by feature articles in international publications such as Guitar Player Magazine.

David Barrett is looking forward to the upcoming DVD and CD releases with great anticipation: “The DVD really captured the energy of the compositions. They were written to be performed live and the spirit of the songs really comes through, musically and visually, through the spectacle and multi camera shoot. It’s the perfect close to our opening chapter and bridge to take our incredibly supportive and loyal fans to the new work, coming in February.” The 14-track live DVD was directed by Peter Genrick, recorded and mixed by Alexander “Sascha” Tukatsch on the BAHM Mobile for BAHM Productions. It was mastered by Phil DeMetro at the Lacquer Channel in Toronto. Executive producers: David Barrett, Jason Farrar, Alexander Tukatsch and Peter Genrick. The David Barrett Trio’s sophomore studio album, “David Barrett Trio II” is scheduled for release on February 3, 2015.

Isolated Guitar Track

Posted above is the isolated guitar from Belmonte, produced and engineered by Alan Parsons and Noble Street Studios in Toronto.
We used a Mack Heatseeker and Skyraider for amplification, Pigtronix Fat Drive, Echolution, and Envelope Phase for effects.
Alan prefers miking guitar with condenser microphones, we kept the 12 string electric guitar bed track, and added a second (detuned slightly sharp), and a third (detuned slightly flat), and added a solo on the Gibson ES175, so it was a very straight ahead session but with some great sounds and an old school recording technique thrown in!
We kept all of Alan's work with no additional overdubs added, Belonte was recorded in one day!

David Barrett The Laud Album

I have a new acoustic album featuring an instrument called the laud, it's also know as a Portuguese 12 string. The Laud Album is comprised of 11 solo tunes, some older ones from previous records, and some brand new compositions, most of which were written on the instrument in open tunings.
Thanks to Paul Reid at HotHouse Creative Inc. for the awesome album art and Adrian Berkovits at Smoothwater Sound for mastering. It's one of my favorite instruments and a key songwriting tool for DB3, hope you like the minimalist nature of this album, it was recorded in one day in December of last year!

Dagmar Custom Guitars - Jane

A couple years ago, the brilliant Canadian luthier Pete Swanson and I had a discussion about guitars and the type of qualities I’d like to see in a simpler Dagmar design, including a Gibson scale, alnico humbucking pick ups, and a wrap around bridge. A year later Pete and I met up and he gave me his latest design to try, I absolutely loved it!

It’s body and neck are hollow, and an awesome solid off white colour, there’s a carbon fiber truss rod that was given to Pete by J.B. Allred by way of a recommendation from the hugely innovative Ken Parker (Parker guitars). According to Pete, the neck is indestructible. The pick ups are outstanding, I’ve always preferred alnico magnets, and these are signature Phil X pick ups, PX3 (neck) and PX8 (bridge), they sound amazing and interestingly Phil put them in the mail an hour after he found out he got the Bon Jovi gig, he was on a plane right after that!

The mahogany neck was carved from a piece of wood that washed up on the shore of the Niagara River, and found by Pete’s late dog Demona before he was a builder. The back and rim is made from an old maple kitchen table, and the top is carved maple from a tree that was struck by lightning. Apparently there was just enough wood to use for the size of the guitar with almost none left to spare.

This is without a doubt the most original guitar I have owned, and it sounds absolutely monstrous, Pete has tweaked the neck and made the action ideal for my playing needs, it’s strung with D’Addario EXL 110 Regular Light. The guitar also features chrome Schaller tuners and chicken head volume and tone knobs in keeping with some of the other classic Dagmar guitars, it’s also what Les Paul had on his original guitar “The Log”.

My 1968 Gibson ES 175 isn’t retired but I’ve been looking for something like this for years to be my main guitar, much like Lindsey Buckingham’s instantly identifiable Turner guitar, I’ve found it with the Dagmar “Jane”.
Thanks Pete!

Lost solo album, The Atomsmasher’s Noisy Trade

The Atomsmasher's Noisy Trade. the lost David Barrett soundscape album from 2003, has just been mysteriously added to iTunes after a decade (albeit with incorrect bio). It was an interesting record and a return to guitar music for me...and great album art by Bill Douglas!
